Gut Bucket Existential Blues

The Story
Rocks and Gravel spent the last 20 years living in the parking lot of a Motel 6 where they honed their blues chops and raised chickens. When their eldest chicken Flossy flew the coop, they decided it was finally time to hit the road. They have been playing to barren, empty rooms in dives all around the country since then. Captain Bill Corners, owner of the famous roast beef stand of the same name says of their performance in his kitchen: “I’ve never seen two players play so long for one sandwich”. When Jack Gravel was asked what his inspiration is for most of his depressing, sorrowful material is, he answers “I take most of my inspiration from the sad divorce that my partner Hot Rocks endured. Watching him get totally destroyed by life, and his pathetic attempt to stay at all relevant while also becoming pretty fat really provided me with enough material to write like 6 albums.” When Hot Rocks is asked how he comes up with his dirty, gutbucket riffs, he answers “I just take all the Led Zeppelin riffs and play them backwards.”
David Wesson (“Mourning Dav”) and Tyler Burba (“Hummingbird) have been collaborating since 1997 when the founded the neo-Blues band Gods Own Drunk. After playing various venues in Boulder, Colorado, they recorded their eponymously titled album in one night, only to find out that their efforts were for naught when a studio intern erased their work. Unfazed, they returned the following night and did it all again. When the album was finished they parted ways, only reuniting a handful of times over a twenty year span.

In 2020, The pandemic brought them back together, meeting in Boston and New York City to make music as a duo or with drummer/saxophonist Larry Terry and bassist/guitarist Jake Pardee. Their new incarnation would be dubbed “Rocks & Gravel” as a return to their youthful roots in the blues, now as old men.
